How to Do Things With Texts

Have you ever wondered what texts actually do in our lives beyond just giving information? Whether it’s a poem in your syllabus, a WhatsApp message from a friend, a social media caption, a classroom notice, or a newspaper editorial, every text performs an action and creates an effect. This idea is connected to an important concept in English studies that suggests language is not only descriptive but also performative—it doesn’t just reflect reality, it helps to shape it. A simple official notice can enforce a new rule in a college; a resignation letter can end a professional relationship; a heartfelt message can heal a misunderstanding; a government circular can change institutional practices; a powerful slogan can mobilise people. In this way, texts influence how we think, how we feel, and how we behave. When we read, we are not passively receiving words; we are actively constructing meaning, interpreting tone, identifying hidden assumptions, and connecting the text with our own experiences and contexts. Similarly, when we write, we are not merely putting sentences on paper; we are making choices about words, structure, and style in order to achieve a purpose—whether to inform, convince, question, protest, entertain, or inspire. Texts also help build identity and culture: literary works preserve memories, represent marginalized voices, and open windows into different worlds; autobiographies and diaries help individuals narrate who they are; religious and philosophical texts guide communities; folk tales and songs carry traditions from one generation to the next. In the digital age, the power of texts has multiplied because our words travel faster and reach wider audiences through emails, posts, blogs, and comments. A single post can create awareness, a blog can start meaningful discussion, and a well-written article can challenge stereotypes and dominant narratives. Therefore, understanding how to do things with texts means becoming more conscious readers and more responsible writers. It means asking not only “What does this text say?” but also “What does this text do?”, “Whose interests does it serve?”, and “How might different readers respond to it?”. When we start seeing texts as tools that act in the world, we become better equipped to use language thoughtfully—so that our words do not just exist, but actually make a positive difference in academic spaces, social interactions, and society at large.

 Habit of reading Books

The habit of reading books is one of the most rewarding and enriching practices a person can develop. Reading not only increases knowledge but also improves concentration, vocabulary and imagination. When we read regularly, we are exposed to new ideas, different cultures, and diverse perspectives that broaden our understanding of the world. Books also help reduce stress by allowing our minds to relax and escape into meaningful stories or informative content. Developing the habit of reading strengthens critical thinking skills and enhances our ability to express thoughts more clearly. In the world full of distractions, making time to read everyday builds discipline and mental resilience. Overall, reading is a lifelong habit that shapes personality, enriches the mind and contributes to personal growth and success.

100 Years of Indian Hockey: Glory, Struggle & Revival

The history of Indian hockey is a compelling tale of genius, adversity, and rebirth. It started in the 1920s when the sport was introduced under British rule and swiftly developed into an area of Indian dominance. This led to the historic 1928 Amsterdam Olympics, where India, led by the unrivalled Dhyan Chand, won gold without giving up a goal, starting a golden age that continued through the 1932 and 1936 Olympics and solidifying India's position as the world's most formidable hockey team. Following independence, this dominance only increased as the team won gold medals at the 1948 London Olympics, its first as a free nation, and then achieved incredible victories in 1952 Helsinki, 1956 Melbourne, and 1964 Tokyo.

Despite the historic high of the 1975 World Cup victory, India struggled to keep up with hockey throughout the 1980s and 1990s due to the introduction of synthetic turf, a surface unfamiliar to Indian players and scarce throughout the country, which made the transition from natural grass difficult and widened the gap with nations that adapted faster. At the same time, administrative issues, a lack of modern training systems, and inconsistent team structure further exacerbated the crisis.

Grew more physical, tactical, and fast. This caused a painful decline, which included inconsistent performances and the loss of India’s former Olympic success. There were urgent calls for structural reform. The 2000s began a resurgence. Professional coaching, scientific conditioning, and better grassroots programs started to appear. States like Odisha invested heavily in world-class infrastructure. The Hockey India League brought new energy to the sport, exposing players to international competition and modern game strategies. This created a pipeline of technically sharp and physically strong athletes. This revival reached an emotional high at the Tokyo 2020 Games.

The modern era of Indian hockey is characterized by improved fitness, tactical discipline, sports science integration, and the emergence of new heroes like PR Sreejesh, Manpreet Singh, Hardik Singh, Rani Rampal, and Savita Punia, who have inspired a new generation and helped India regain its position among the top hockey nations in the world. The men's team won a bronze medal at the Olympics, ending a 41year Olympic medal drought, and the women's team made it to the  semifinals for the first time, garnering international acclaim and reigniting the nation's love for    the sport. The past century, which was marked by unparalleled Olympic glory, a challenging       period of decline, and a spirited, determined comeback, serves as a powerful reminder that while greatness can fade, passion, resilience, and reinvention can bring it back stronger than ever.       As such, Indian hockey's 100-year history is not just a chronicle of a sport, but a testament to the enduring spirit of a nation that continues to chase its dreams on the field with heart, pride, and    hope for an even brighter future.

How Artificial Intelligence is Changing Daily Life

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is changing daily life in many ways and is becoming a normal part of our routine. AI powers smart speakers, security systems and appliances at home that can be controlled by voice, learn user habits and improve convenience and energy efficiency. AI in entertainment personalizes services like Netflix, YouTube and Spotify by suggesting films, videos and songs based on our tastes. AI-powered tools like Google Maps, ride-sharing applications and automobiles with safety features like collision detection and lane-assist have also made traveling easier. Smartphones are smarter and more efficient thanks to AI, which is used for face recognition, predictive text, camera enhancement and power management.

AI in education makes learning more accessible by enabling Chatbots, language tools, automated grading and personalized learning. AI has significantly improved healthcare by assisting in the early detection of diseases, analysing medical images and tracking health through smart devices such as fitness bands and smartwatches. Online platforms that use AI to manage inventory, help customers and make product recommendations have also improved the shopping experience. AI is used by banks and financial systems as well to analyse transactions, identify fraud and enhance security. All things considered, artificial intelligence (AI) quietly improves life by making it quicker, easier and safer. As technology develops, its role will only increase.
