Greatest Happiness of the Greatest Number
The greatest happiness principle is a moral ideology, which holds that the best thing to do is
what contributes to the greatest happiness of the greatest number of people.
During the middle Ages, it was widely believed that happiness is not possible in earthly life
and that the basis of morality was in the word of God. These views were contested in the
“Enlightenment”; happiness came to be seen as attainable, and morality was regarded as man-
made. A lively discussion on the relation between happiness and morality emerged, and in this
climate, an instrumental view on morality appeared, in which ethical codes are seen as ways of
securing a happy life.
Much of this enlightened thought is reflected in Jeremy Bentham’s (1907) “Introduction to
morals and legislation.” Bentham argues that the moral quality of an action should be judged
by its consequences on human happiness.
The greatest happiness of the greatest number is a dynamic concept in Modern India which is
becoming parameter of every action of the State. Government Policy is kept importance for
development to County and fulfils the desire of people in the Society. Policy means a course of
action adopted by a government, business, individual and people. That is essence and reform in
legal, economic and political society. Part IV of the Constitution of India the Directive Principle
of State policy is Direct to the negative fundamental right for citizens which are promoted to
consider by the government when making the policies. It is kinds of fundamental rights. Through
the government, Policy State is providing the atmosphere for the people to improve their living
status, education, participation in-country, equality and justice etc. and standard policy-making
base of good governance.
India is a symbol of unity in diversity and many linguistic and religious persons lived here and
various scheme running by the government for the interest of people like that, Ujjwala Yojana,
Gramodyauday se Bharat Uday, Swash Bharat Abhiyan, Beti Padho Beti Bachao Scheme etc.,
that the policies are targeting to provide, pleasures and avoid pains of people and protect rights
of people and individual. We can say, the principle of the greatest happiness of the greatest
number is the soul of democracy and maintaining rule of law. If all government policies are
enforced in an actual manner so the structure of India will become good, glorious, strong and
healthy.
